Anshun (安順市) is the gateway to Huangguoshu Waterfall, and the logistics are the easiest part of the plan. The real decisions are how many nights to allow, when to go for the best water, and how to place the falls in a Guizhou or southwest route. This guide covers access, time, season and sequencing with Guiyang, the villages and Guilin.
How to reach Anshun and the falls
Anshun is on the high-speed rail line west of Guiyang, with a journey of about half an hour from Guiyang North to Anshun West. From the station, a road transfer of roughly forty-five minutes reaches the Huangguoshu ticket centre, by shuttle bus or taxi. Confirm current station names and schedules through official rail sources, since the city has more than one station and the right arrival point shortens the last leg. A direct tourist bus from Guiyang also exists but involves a longer ride; the train plus road transfer is usually the faster shape. Within the scenic area, shuttle buses link the fall, the cave and the side areas.

How many nights to allow
One full day covers the main fall, the water-curtain cave and the side areas if you arrive early and move efficiently. Two days is the more relaxed choice, letting you see the broader cluster without rush and giving margin against crowds or poor light. Overnighting near the falls or in Anshun is common, since a dawn start beats the tour buses. The mistake is a tight half-day squeezed between trains, which forces you to skip the side areas and arrive after the morning light. Plan at least one full day, and prefer two if the route allows.
Best months and water volume
The falls change dramatically with season. The rainy period, roughly May to September, brings the fullest, loudest water and the most dramatic cave experience, but also heat, humidity and the largest crowds. The shoulder months of spring and autumn offer strong flow with more comfortable conditions. The dry season, from about November to April, thins the water to a fraction of its peak and softens the spectacle, though the trails are quiet. If your trip only allows winter, lower your expectations and enjoy the calmer karst scenery. There is no fixed festival date that improves the visit, so choose by water and crowd balance.
Sequencing with Guiyang, the villages and Guilin
Huangguoshu is the western anchor of a Guiyang loop and pairs naturally with the Miao villages of the southeast as contrast, one being a natural set piece, the other a cultural one. A clean shape is Guiyang, then Anshun for the falls, then southeast to the villages, or the reverse. It also fits a wider southwest route: Guilin, Chengdu and Chongqing all rail into Guiyang, so the falls slot in as a Guizhou day from any of those. Keep it off Hunan and Fujian loops, where the transfers are long and the logic weak.
At the scenic area
The main fall is the set piece, and the water-curtain cave behind it is the experience most visitors remember, so build the day around both. The Doupotang and Tianxingqiao areas extend the visit and are worth the shuttle time if your day allows. Paths are built but can be wet from spray, so waterproof shoes and a rain layer are sensible in the high-water months. Manage expectations on crowds, since the headline fall draws tour groups; an early start is the simplest way to get ahead of them.
Practical notes
- Take the high-speed train from Guiyang to Anshun West, then a shuttle or taxi to the falls; verify schedules and the transfer through official sources.
- Allow one full day at minimum, or two for a relaxed visit and margin against crowds.
- Visit in the rainy season for full water, but accept heat and crowds; the dry season is quiet but thin.
- Build the day around the main fall and the cave behind it, then add the side areas by shuttle.
- Sequence Huangguoshu as a western Guizhou or southwest anchor, not on a Hunan or Fujian loop.
- Confirm opening hours, admission, shuttle operation and any timed entry through current official sources.
