Payment & Apps
Prepare Payment, Maps, Messaging, and Data Before Arrival
Many travel problems in China are not attraction problems. They are payment, network, map, or communication problems that should be solved before the first travel day.
Payment
How visitors usually pay
Alipay
Useful across mainland China for taxis, restaurants, shops, tickets, and daily spending. International card setup should be tested before travel.
WeChat Pay
Useful for daily payments and local communication, especially when guides, drivers, or local contacts use WeChat.
Cards
Major hotels and premium venues may accept cards, but small restaurants, local shops, drivers, and markets may not.
Cash
Carry a small backup amount. It helps when phone battery, verification, or local payment tools fail.
Apps
Tools to prepare before travel
Messaging
Confirm the communication channel before arrival: WhatsApp, WeChat, email, or phone.
Maps
Save Chinese names for hotels, stations, attractions, and meeting points. English names alone are not enough.
Connectivity
Prepare roaming, eSIM, or local SIM so payment and map tools work immediately after arrival.
Tickets and booking
Some attractions, trains, and local services need passport names or app-based booking details.
